What are signs that divorce may be in your future?

When it comes to divorce, planning in advance often helps. You may need to gather paperwork, change bank accounts, inventory assets, consider local divorce laws, and much more. In other words, it’s just helpful if you can spot any red flags that indicate you may get divorced in the future.

But what red flags should you look for? Every relationship is unique, but here are a few examples to keep in mind.

Everything becomes a fight

First off, if every little conflict is becoming a fight, then you may have deeper issues in the relationship. It’s normal to disagree on things like what to have for dinner, but if these become serious arguments, it could be that you are fundamentally unhappy being married.

The fighting stops

Another red flag, ironically, is the end of arguments and disagreements. This could indicate that one of you has essentially checked out of the relationship and no longer sees the benefit of engaging in these disputes.

You prefer spending time elsewhere

If the two of you prefer being at work or spending time with friends, rather than being together at home, that could also indicate that the relationship is unhealthy. Some time apart is good, of course, but it’s a red flag if you dread going home to your partner.

You don’t have anything in common

Finally, even when you do spend time together, you may feel like you no longer have anything in common and you’re just growing apart. Maybe you don’t have anything to talk about or you don’t have any overlapping hobbies.

If you do find yourself in this position and facing a divorce, be sure you understand exactly what legal options you have.
